Tools for the Toolbelt

Every workman / work-woman knows, there are some tools that hang on the wall, and other tools  that hang off of your belt. For instance, in the Wilson household, there are a few tools being pulled off the wall this weekend in preparation for trick or treating costume creations, pumpkin carving, and leaf pile building. These are specialized tools for very specific tasks. These are the things you only need once and a while, but are incredibly helpful if you have them. (Who would have imagined the usefulness of that pumpkin carving saw?) However, the tools hanging on your tool belt are much more standard, practical, and typical. They are the scissors, the duct tape, and tack hammer you utilize every single day.

We are living in unprecedented times. It feels like there are no correct answers, no correct solutions, it feels like there aren't even correct emotions. When you look on the tool wall, it doesn't seem like any of the tools there are precise enough to fix the damage that we see everywhere we look. Perhaps I could remind you to consider three of the work-belt tools available to every Christ follower today. Where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. ... And now these three remain: faith, hope and love.

Let us be people of Faith.
 - Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Let us be people of Hope.
 - Hope in the Lord, for with the Lord there is unfailing love. His redemption overflows.
Let us be people of Love.
 - Love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.

May it be our ambition to utilize these tools well. If you look closely, they each build on one another. When all the crazy of the present day fades into the distance, all that will be remembered from the world about about Jesus followers is this: Were those Christians people of faith, hope, and love? Let's get to work!
